EAA Pilot Proficiency Center offers workshops, open sim, free education events in 2026

Posted on February 23, 2026 by mwflyer

Pilots seeking to brush up on their skills in a controlled, simulated environment can participate in several sessions over the coming months at the EAA Pilot Proficiency Center in Oshkosh. The Pilot Proficiency Center features a collection of Redbird LD Advanced Aviation Training Devices (AATD) allowing pilots to practice a complete range of maneuvers and situations alone, or with guidance from an instructor pilot provided by EAA or the student.

Once per month, pilots can participate in Visual Flight Rules (VFR) Workshops to sharpen their skills on select topics in clear weather simulations. The next session is scheduled for February 28 with a focus on non-towered/uncontrolled field operations.

Instrument-rated pilots, or those working toward an instrument rating, can get additional practice by attending the twice-monthly IFR Series. These workshops are hosted by EAA CFIs with each session focusing on a different aspect of IFR flight. The next two sessions on the schedule are February 23 and March 9 with focuses on non-precision approaches, and precision approaches respectively.

Pilots looking for a more customizable experience can also book a timeslot during one of the monthly open sim events, using the Redbird training devices. Pilots can fly solo, with assistance from an EAA CFI or CFII, or with their own instructor pilot. The next event is scheduled for March 21. Pilots are required to book ahead of time online.

The Pilot Proficiency Center, adjacent to the EAA Aviation Museum, also hosts two free events every month. Aero Safety is held on the first Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. and offers pilots an opportunity to brush up on their safety in a classroom setting. Aero Trivia takes place on the third Monday of each month. Pilots can put their brains to the test as they compete in a series of aviation questions. Both events are free for everyone and do not require advance registration.

More information about all Pilot Proficiency Center events can be found on the EAA website.
