Each September, “Girls in Aviation Day” connects thousands of young women around the world to the exciting world of aviation. Founded by Women in Aviation International (WAI) in 2015, the event is dedicated to encouraging girls ages 8 to 18 to explore careers in the aviation and aerospace industries where opportunity is truly soaring.
Hosted by 180 WAI local chapters around the world, airports, aviation museums, flight schools, and aviation-related organizations, Girls in Aviation Day events are held globally. This event features a wide variety of engaging and hands-on activities designed to both educate and inspire, showing young girls that aviation is exciting and achievable.
Girls have the opportunity to explore all kinds of fun activities, take aircraft tours, and engage in the science of aviation. All these experiences are paired with opportunities to meet and connect with aviation career women working across all areas of the industry. These amazing women serve as mentors and role models, helping girls visualize their own future in aviation. By sharing their stories and providing guidance, they encourage young people to dream big, pursue their interests, and realize they belong in this field. For so many girls, this experience can be life changing.
The impact of Girls in Aviation Day is real and lasting. Many young women have gone on to enroll in aviation programs, earn pilot certificates, or begin careers in aerospace. It is also very rewarding for many young women to return to the event as volunteers and speakers.
As we celebrate this special day each year, we’re inspiring minds, lifting ambitions, and opening the skies to a whole new generation of women ready to take flight.
