Minnesota Seaplane Safety Seminar: A Weekend of Learning, Connection, and Community

Posted on November 27, 2025November 27, 2025 by mwflyer

The Minnesota Seaplane Pilots Association (MSPA) hosted its annual Seaplane Safety Seminar this past fall, September 19-20, 2025, at Madden’s on Gull Lake, welcoming aviation professionals and enthusiasts from across the state for a weekend of education, fellowship, and fun! Despite a stretch of gray skies and rain, the event drew a strong turnout, underscoring the passion and resilience that defines Minnesota’s seaplane community.

Attendees included representatives from Northpoint Aviation, Park Rapids Aviation, Wipaire, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Aeronautics, the FAA, and numerous aviation vendors. MnDOT Aeronautics hosted an exhibit booth to share updates on statewide programs, and Director Ryan Gaug delivered his annual presentation on Minnesota’s aviation initiatives—highlighting infrastructure projects, licensing improvements, and continued investment in safety education.

The two-day seminar offered a mix of technical presentations, hands-on discussions, and safety workshops, all designed to enhance pilot proficiency and promote collaboration across the industry. Friday opened with Wipaire’s annual Poker Run, followed by evening entertainment and a keynote session from Troy Siekas, whose talk, “The Frankenplane,” delved into the growing complexity of stacked Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) and their implications for maintenance and safety.

Beyond the formal sessions, the event offered plenty of opportunities for attendees to swap stories, exchange ideas, and enjoy camaraderie—hallmarks of the MSPA community.

The weekend concluded with the Accuracy Landing Contest on Steamboat Bay, a spirited display of skill and precision that drew an enthusiastic crowd. Pilots of all experience levels participated. The competition served as both an entertaining finale and a reminder of the finesse and judgment required in seaplane operations.

Each year, the Minnesota Seaplane Safety Seminar reinforces why the state’s seaplane community remains one of the most active and connected in the nation. The event successfully blended education, safety awareness, and fellowship, creating an atmosphere that celebrates both the joy of flying and the responsibility that comes with it.

The Minnesota Seaplane Pilots Association, MnDOT Aeronautics, FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam), and numerous aviation partners deserve recognition for another well-executed event. Planning is already underway for next year’s return to Madden’s on Gull Lake—promising another weekend of learning, laughter, and lakefront landings.
