EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, WIS. — There will be more than just airplanes flying over Oshkosh on Saturday, June 18, as EAA’s 10th annual “Wings on Strings” Kite Festival will take place at Pioneer Airport outside the EAA AirVenture Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The free family event, the largest giant kite show in the Midwest, is sponsored by the Milwaukee’s Gift of Wings Kite Store, Kite Society of Wisconsin and Illinois, and EAA.
Several huge kites are scheduled to fly, including those from Yves LaForest of Montreal, Quebec – a 140 foot-long Mega Octopus, a 100-foot-long Manta Ray Kite, and the giant Bear and giant Star kites. Another will drop candy for attendees, plus the six-member Chicago Fire Kite Team will perform to musical accompaniment throughout the day.
All guests are encouraged to bring their own kite and participate in a mass launch of nearly 400 kites at 11:30 a.m., Guests are also invited to participate in kite-making workshops where they will be able to decorate and fly their own kite designs on the runway. Kites, as well as food, will be available to purchase on-site at the Gift of Wings Kite Store.
A free kite is available for the first 100 children who sign up and participate in the “Kids’ Mad Dash” at 2 p.m.
The EAA AirVenture Museum is located just off Highway 41 at the Highway 44 exit in Oshkosh. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. EAA members receive free museum admission year-round.
