I’ve never experienced Upper Michigan like I experienced it this year. In addition to visiting Mackinac Island, our family vacationed throughout much of the Upper Michigan Peninsula. With Lake Superior bordering to the north, and Lake Michigan to the south, the scenery is breathtaking, but remember to bring your hiking shoes if you want to experience sandy beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, lighthouses and inland lakes.

The “East Channel Lighthouse” on Michigan’s Grand Island near Munising, Michigan, is unique in that it was constructed of wood and not stone or brick. The building was built in 1870 and served as both a lighthouse and keeper’s home until 1913. The lighthouse was replaced by new range lights which were installed at Munising in 1908. George Prior was the lighthouse keeper at the turn of the century. Located on private property, the lighthouse cannot be accessed by land. However, it can be seen by private boat, kayak or commercial ferry. The building is maintained by the property owner. Dave Weiman Photo
