MnDOT Aeronautics has awarded $8 million for 57 improvement projects at 39 public airports across Minnesota—investments that directly enhance the flying experience for recreational pilots. These upgrades stretch statewide, from Stephen and Roseau in the northwest to Two Harbors and Duluth Sky Harbor along the North Shore, and Worthington and Fairmont in the south.
Most of the funding ($5.54 million) is dedicated to the infrastructure pilots rely on every day: runway and taxiway pavement and turf rehabilitation, crack repair, and obstruction removal to support safer approaches and departures. Additional projects will improve stormwater systems, upgrade fuel facilities, enhance airport buildings, and install new security lighting—all contributing to more dependable, well‑maintained airports for general aviation.
“We’re proud to invest in projects that enhance the airport experience for pilots and aviation enthusiasts across Minnesota,” said Ryan Gaug, director of MnDOT’s Office of Aeronautics. “Strong airports mean safer operations, more reliable facilities, and better access to the places Minnesotans love to fly.”
These improvements are funded through the Minnesota State Airports Fund, supported by aviation fuel and sales taxes, aircraft property taxes, and registration fees, meaning pilots’ contributions directly support the airports they depend on.
