I have been privileged to contribute articles for the “High On Health” column in Midwest Flyer Magazine for more than 10 years, assuming the reins left by Dr. John Beasley, and before him, the late Dr. Henry Wilson. Like me, both John and Henry were pilots and aircraft owners, so it made what they wrote more relatable to our readers, than if they were not.
As I look back, I’m surprised at the number of articles I have written and the diverse subjects I have covered. Being an ophthalmologist by training, I needed to expand my horizons and find subjects of interest to pilots. The original idea for the column was to discuss health issues and talk about things pilots could do to improve their health, live longer and fly more safely. That was and still is straight forward — eat a healthy diet, exercise moderately, don’t use drugs, don’t smoke, and if you drink, drink moderately. I avoided writing about unproven fads. Over the years, I found myself writing more and more about dealing with the FAA medical certification process. This was because airmen with health issues were finding the certification process increasingly difficult to navigate. That has improved, but there is still room for improvement.
Over the past 20 years I have been an FAA ophthalmology consultant. During that time, I have been able to make several certification suggestions which were adopted. By continuing as an AME, I think I can continue to have an impact. There is still work to be done.
It has been fun to investigate the subjects I have written about, but it has been quite time consuming. I’ve tried to write clearly, so there was no chance of having a misunderstanding. I’ve chosen the subjects and expressed my opinions. Thank you for reading my articles. I hope they have been helpful.
While I plan to continue to be an AME for now and hope to continue to contribute an article from time to time when I find something of interest, it’s time for someone else to assume the mantle.
The publishers of Midwest Flyer Magazine, Dave and Peggy Weiman, produce an excellent general aviation magazine and continue to be successful in challenging times. The digital format increases the opportunities for readers and advertisers. They are to be commended, and I wish them continued success!
If there are any AMEs willing to assume my post and contribute articles to the magazine, please contact Dave at dave@midwestflyer.com or call him at 608-772-1776.
Happy flying!
