Elected President of the Minnesota Aviation Trades Association (MATA) at the organization’s May 9, 2025, meeting, was Joe LaRue, who founded Prairie Air Inc. in Elbow Lake, Minnesota, in 2005 with his wife, Laura. The company specializes in Robinson helicopter maintenance.
Joe’s aviation journey began in Minnesota, earning his pilot’s license as a teenager and working in crop-spraying. His time with Columbia Helicopters provided hands-on experience, forming the foundation for Prairie Air Inc. Laura complements Joe’s technical expertise, managing daily operations, customer relations, and business development. As a certified Robinson Helicopter Service Center, Prairie Air has gained a strong reputation for inspections, aircraft overhauls, and customer service.
In addition to operating Prairie Air Inc., the LaRues manage Elbow Lake Municipal Airport (Y63), where they have overseen major improvements, including many air-side needs, hangars and the expansion of the fixed base operator building.
The LaRues are passionate about inspiring the next generation of aviation professionals. They have partnered with Ashby American Legion Auxiliary Unit #357 to host the “Wheels, Tracks & Wings” event, celebrating the Month of the Military Child with aircraft displays and educational activities. They also work with EAA Chapter 1174 to help provide “Young Eagles” flights, giving local students a firsthand introduction to aviation careers.
As President of the Minnesota Aviation Trades Association (MATA), Joe will advocate for policies that support general aviation growth and sustainability. Through this role, he will work with other industry leaders to address challenges and promote workforce development.
Despite their busy schedules, Joe and Laura prioritize strong relationships with their customers. Their hands-on approach has built Prairie Air’s reputation as a company that values integrity and personal service.
As Prairie Air Inc. continues to grow, Joe and Laura remain dedicated to the values that built the company — expertise, trust, and a passion for aviation. Whether advocating for industry advancements or inspiring young aviators, they are committed to making a lasting impact in aviation and their community.
